This five-story dollhouse is contained in a vintage tall slim bookcase. The lowest level is my 1950’s Diner/Soda Shop, and the upper four floors are the living quarters of the owners. There are only four rooms featured in this dollhouse, but always subject to change. The uppermost is the daughter’s bedroom, the second from the top is the son’s room, the third is the living room, and the fourth is the kitchen.
There are some artisan pieces, as well as commercial items, and some that I fashioned myself, including the girl’s dresser, which was old and I repainted it and embellished it with roses. I made the seashell vignette and the well-travelled suitcase in the boy’s room and painted a number of the china plates. There are also a few things that I had when I was a child, such as the plastic doll carriage and the TV, which is a vintage wooden saltshaker.
I tried to put as many 1950’s type accessories into the house as I could. Many of the boy’s toys, books and figurines are what a typical boy of the 1950’s might have had. The kitchen sports Fiestaware and Pyrex, a retro refrigerator, which was 3-D printed by my daughter, and then painted and accessorized by me, and 50’s type picnic containers. Recently I added several chairs to the kitchen, one that is an Eames-type style and two that are Brewer-type style. There are so many neat mid-century modern miniatures that can be found, and I have enjoyed bringing them together in a 1:12 scale world.
