I often name my creations because of the container they are in. This one is called Spooky House, because when I bought this four-room dollhouse at an auction, it was decorated with a Halloween motif, as if it were a spooky museum and shop. I completely gutted the house and repainted the outside. I wallpapered all the rooms, added flooring made out of real wood strips (made for a dollhouse), crown molding and baseboards, and installed battery-powered overhead lights in each room. The glass windows are built in, but the house needed a front door, which I put in. After that, it was great fun to decorate each room, and I went with a roughly early-to-mid twentieth century look. The kitchen is actually the “oldest” room in the house, since it still has a vintage ice box, farm-type sink and older stove. The other rooms could easily be more current. The upper left is a lawyer’s home office, the upper right is a bedroom decorated with vintage style furniture, and the living room features a stone fireplace and traditional style furniture. Many of the items are handmade by artisans, including the cute little dog in the office, although I don’t know the artist of this one.
In the gallery section of photos of this house, the first two are of the empty house once it was repainted and papered, and the last several pictures are of a few items I made or put together myself. I also painted and antiqued the previously unfinished bed.
