Some family members of mine emigrated to the US from Germany in the 1920’s, and their furnishings tended to reflect their heritage. I envisioned this room box to represent what some of my relatives would have had in their homes in the late 1940’s. I call this a dollhouse, although it is displayed on several shelves. The furniture is almost all from Germany. Some belonged to my mother when she was a girl, and some her father, my grandfather, sent to me from Germany when I was little. My grandfather in the US, who was a cabinetmaker, made a dollhouse for me when I was seven, that had glass windows, lighting installed by my father, and curtains and other linens made by my mother. However, I am currently unable to display that dollhouse, so I put everything on the shelves. There are some newer items I added to the scene, but tried to keep the look to that of the time period. The mother in the kitchen is an antique German china head doll, and the little boys in the high chair and at the play table in the “attic” are vintage 1950’s German dolls.
