Quaint Bake Shop

Nina Fair , 2022

When I was a teenager, I worked part time in my cousin’s bakery, which offered a wonderful variety of foods, from delicious breads and rolls to fresh donuts, pastries and cookies.  There were also various cakes, and sometimes even a wedding cake.  This depiction includes many sculpted cakes, desserts and breads, mostly made in the UK by artisans.  The sign was handmade for me in the Netherlands, and I painted some of the furniture to make it look a little worn.  There is a little Hummel style baker sitting on the counter, and the cash register reminded me of the one we had in the bakery.  I didn’t really have a specific era in mind for this room box, but it could be almost any time in the 20th century.

Much of the food items are artisan made, but unsigned, and came from England.  There are some cookies on plates made by Sue Ayres, a crock by Eileen Vernon, and a tiny Goebel Hummel-style baker figurine.
